Zelda Pixel Art Cup Sleeves (or Cup Cozies)
These are adapted from ChiWei Ranck’s Bunny Cup Cozy pattern — I was inspired by the pixel art look of the stitch to try some simple but classic Zelda icons: the life hearts meter and the potion. Does your beverage of choice replenish your health or your magic?

Notes
- Don’t change colors on the last YO of the stitch before the new color (as you usually would); instead, change to the new color with the first YO on the first stitch of the new color (starting the stitch when the current loop on your hook is the previous color). On the current row, this may look a bit skewed, but once the next row covers it, there won’t be any of the wrong color showing through.
- Keep the background color (grey) very loosely floated behind when you’re using the other colors. At the end, weave in yarn tails over the floats to secure them. This prevents the grey from showing through the other colors, as it would if you carried it.
- Pick up and drop the other colors as you start and finish them in the row; do not carry or float them around the rest of the cup sleeve. For symmetrical graphics, leave roughly half of the yarn on each side when joining a new color so that you can use the left tail for the left half and the right tail for the right half of the design—this means less carrying/floating yarn and fewer ends to weave in.
- For the life hearts design, you’ll want to use separate bobbins for each heart; don’t carry your pink yarn across all three hearts.
- You may want to loosen your stitches very slightly as you get higher up the cup sleeve so that the top will stretch a bit more than the bottom. This allows it to fit better onto cups (wider at the top than the bottom). Most people will naturally loosen up as they get into a rhythm anyway.
- In the instructions, I’ve written out the color before the stitches, e.g., “white FPSC 7” means “with white yarn, front post single crochet for 7 stitches.” Also, I’ve only listed the color if you need to change colors; if there is no color mentioned, continue using the current color.
